SYMPATHETIC NERVE BLOCKS
Sympathetic nerve blocks are minimally invasive injections that are used to relieve neuropathic pain. This treatment is an important option for those suffering from CRPS and other conditions.
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER SYMPATHETIC NERVE BLOCKS?
Patients with poorly controlled neuropathic painmay benefit from sympathetic nerve blocks. Specifically, they can be used to provide relief from CRPS, headaches, neck and arm pain, upper abdominal pain from chronic pancreatitis, lower abdominal pain from crohn’s diseaese or ulcerative colitis, pelvic pain, and leg pain.
what is the procedure like?
The skin above the target sympathetic nerve is numbed with local anesthetic given through a tiny needle. A potential local anesthetic is then injected through a needle placed in the direct vicinity of the target nerve. A gentle steroid may be added to help prolong the duration of benefit.
After care
Patients are asked to rest for 24 hours directly following the procedure to reduce the chance of complications. Long-term pain relief generally begins about 2-3 days after the treatment. Some patients require a series of injections for the best results.
