Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

When one of the major nerves running to the hand is compressed as it travels through the wrist, this can result in pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. This squeezing of the nerve, the median nerve, and resulting symptoms, is called carpal tunnel syndrome.

In most cases, symptoms worsen over time, so it’s important to take action early to relieve pressure on the nerve. Wrist splints can be effective, as can avoidance of certain activities. If pressure on the median nerve continues despite treatment, surgery may be needed.

The cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is the swelling of tissues surrounding the tendons in the wrist. This causes the pressure on the nerve.
