Peripheral nerve stimulators
Non-opioid, non surgical options for dealing with pain are important. Peripheral nerve stimulators are one such option. Similar to spinal cord stimulation treatment, peripheral nerve stimulation uses electrical pulses to interrupt pain signals.
Unlike the spinal treatment, however, in peripheral stimulation, the devices directing the electrical pulses are placed under the skin near the associated nerves.
Peripheral nerve stimulators can treat pain the back and in the extremities. They can be used for both chronic and acute pain, including for post-operative and post-traumatic pain.
Studies suggest about a 50 percent reduction in pain for most people who use a peripheral nerve stimulator.
